Chapter - Pursuit

Pursuit is a recurring scene.

The darting shadow is a thing.

Pursuit begins when

player holds flashlight and

emergency lights are switched on and

The Rabbit's Offer has not happened and

voice has been visible and

the shadow appears.

To decide whether the shadow appears:

if location is The Open Desert for at least six turns, decide on whether or not a random chance of 1 in 4 succeeds;

if location is Roof, decide no;

if location is in Around the Tower, decide on whether or not a random chance of 1 in 3 succeeds;

decide no.

Understand "movement/moving/something" as darting shadow. The darting shadow has a direction called the path.

The initial appearance of darting shadow is "[one of]Hey, there it is again[or]Yeah, you're sure you saw it[or]It's gone now... no, wait[in random order]-- [one of]something's moving[or]movement[or]a darting shadow[in random order], to the [path of darting shadow]."

Instead of doing anything to the darting shadow, say "Hey, you're not even sure you saw it."

When Pursuit begins:

let desert connection be an object;

if location is The Open Desert:

now desert connection is the bunny's path;

otherwise if location is Weed-strewn Rust:

now desert connection is east;

otherwise:

now desert connection is west;

now path of darting shadow is desert connection;

move darting shadow to location;

if darting shadow is visible, say "[one of]Out of the corner of your eye you spot a glimpse of something moving in the darkness, off in the desert to the [path of darting shadow][or]You see that weird movement again, out in the shadows to the [path of darting shadow][stopping]."

To decide which direction is the bunny's path: decide on a random cardinal direction.

The darting shadow has a number called times followed. The times followed of darting shadow is 0.

Before going during Pursuit:

if noun is path of darting shadow:

increase the times followed of darting shadow by 1;

otherwise:

now times followed of darting shadow is 0;

now darting shadow is off-stage;

say "You lose sight of whatever it was."

Carry out going path of darting shadow when darting shadow is visible during Pursuit:

say "[if times followed of darting shadow is 1]You head off in the direction of the movement, scanning with your flashlight over the skittering shadows.[otherwise if times followed of darting shadow is 2]You chase after the shadow, faster and faster, breath misting in the cold air.[otherwise]Some crazy thrill comes over you. You feel like a hunter. You can almost smell the thing you're chasing in the air. You [italic type]can[roman type] smell it, sweaty fur and terror. You race after it.[end if]";

now path of darting shadow is the bunny's path.

Instead of going path of darting shadow when times followed of darting shadow is at least 4 and darting shadow is visible:

say "Dodging after the fleeing, skittering shadow, you're almost caught up to it when your foot trips on a rock and you stumble to the ground. But the ground doesn't stop your fall, it collapses, and you're tumbling in a shower of dirt clods down a hole, rolling down some crazy underground tunnel clutching at mud and roots, till finally you slide into some damp, fetid place, and come up a stop against something soft, huge, warm. And furry.";

now player is in Burrow;

now darting shadow is off-stage.

Pursuit ends when darting shadow is not visible. When Pursuit ends: now times followed of darting shadow is 0.
