Chapter - Sand-dancer's Arrival

Sand-dancer's Arrival is a dramatic scene. "There's like this faint tickle through the soles of your feet, some vibration, almost like whispers in the sand. You want to bend down, put your ear to the ground, listen forever.[paragraph break]And then the ground drops out from under you, heaves, and drops again. Struts groan and boards snap and then with a whooshing bang sand starts pouring in through the window and every crack, jets of sand, and already it's shin-deep and holy christ you've got to get out of here."

To decide whether time for arrival: if the number of complete plans is 1 or the number of in progress plans is 2, decide yes.[aar]

Going outside is leaving the building. Going southwest is leaving the building. Entering a window is leaving the building.

tried to leave is a truth state variable. Instead of leaving the building when time for arrival and not insufficient memories found: say "[one of]You start to go out, but then you stop. Something's not right. Something's... weird.[or]The building's sinking into the sand! You've got to get out some other way![stopping]"; now tried to leave is true.

Sand-dancer's Arrival begins when time for arrival and tried to leave is true and not insufficient memories found. Sand-dancer's Arrival ends when location is Roof.

Every turn during Sand-dancer's Arrival: say "The building shakes and groans as sand continues to pour in, rising higher and higher."

Report going during Sand-dancer's Arrival: say "You wade through the sand, which is rising all the time."

The Sand-dancer room description body text rule is listed instead of the room description body text rule in the carry out looking rules.

This is the Sand-dancer room description body text rule: if Sand-dancer's Arrival is happening and location is in Office Interior, describe sand-filled room; otherwise abide by the room description body text rule.

To describe sand-filled room: say "[one of]Waves of sand flow like water through the room, filling it higher and higher[or]Knee-deep sand fills the room, rising at a terrifying rate[or]The deluge of sand thunders in from every side, filling the room[at random]."

The Sand-dancer emergency exit rule is listed after the Sand-dancer room description body text rule in the carry out looking rules. This is the Sand-dancer emergency exit rule: if Sand-dancer's arrival is happening and location is in Office Interior, say "You glance wildly at the exits [list of viable directions]; [the random visible detrital thing] [one of]surfaces for a moment then gets buried[or]tumbles in the flow[or]vanishes under the sand[at random]."

Definition: a direction is viable if the room it from the location is a room.

[Exercise 10.9]

Definition: a thing is detrital: if it is the player, no; if it is a window, no; if it is a door, no; if it is scenery, no; if it is enclosed by player, no; yes.

[And also, change the say statement in the Sand-dancer emergency exit rule to read: "You glance wildly at the exits [the list of viable directions]; [the random visible detrital thing] [one of]surfaces for a moment then gets buried[or]tumbles in the flow[or]vanishes under the sand[at random]."]

Instead of throwing something at a window during Sand-dancer's Arrival: say "It's no good; the window shatters and sand rushes in through it."; now noun is off-stage.

Doing something to the radio is wasting time. Doing something to cans of food is wasting time. Examining something is wasting time. Before wasting time during Sand-dancer's Arrival: say "There's no time, man! The room's filling with sand!" instead.

After going up during Sand-dancer's Arrival: say "Barely able to reach the ladder through sand up to your waist, you haul yourself up the rungs and pull free just in time."; try looking.

Before going up during Sand-dancer's Arrival:

now description of Roof is "Except it's more like a foundation now, the building's sunken almost entirely into the sand.";

now metal rungs are off-stage;

now huge metal barrel is off-stage;

change the up exit of Roof to nothing.

Instead of going nowhere when location is Roof and Sand-dancer's Arrival has happened: say "No way, man. There's freaking lizards everywhere."
